Stabilimento is the latest recording of veteran bassist/producer Roberto Occhipinti. Drawing upon wide variety of musical influences, he joined on this musical journey with a stellar cast of musicians.
The opening track Tuareg, influenced by the music of north Africa and Charles Mingus, features saxophonists Tim Ries (Rolling Stones) and Luis Deniz (Rich Brown), Grammy nominated pianist Manuel Valera and the celebrated McArthur award genius grant winner Dafnis Prieto on drums.
The next track Dom De Illudir is a beautiful ballad by Caetano Velosa.
The group then delves into Opus 132, a chorale theme by Beethoven, arranged by Occhipinti with a Coltrane like swing.
Another Star by Stevie Wonder is re-imagined as slow balladand the group shifts gears to play Que Bolla, a Cuban timba tune written for the great pianist Stefano Bollani.
On Stabilimento, the core group is joined by winds, horns, percussion and a string quartet in a loping reggae shuffle.
Recorded 4 years earlier, the next set of pieces feature the Hilario Duran Trio, a working rhythm section for over 15 years with Hilario Duran on piano and Mark Kelso on drums.
Penelope by Wayne Shorter features Quinson Nachoff on tenor sax and te full ensemble, and adds Kevin GTurcotte on trumpet with the original tune Trinacria, adapted for this ensemble in a new arrangement.
The disc closes out with Markato, another show stopper for drummer Mark Kelso, in a piece dedicated to him.
